Wyndhams Theatre London

Wyndam's Theatre London

The Wyndham’s Theatre was designed by well-known theatre architect WGR Sprague for Charles Wyndham. It opened its doors in 1899 with a production called David Garrick.

Early productions include Tyranny of Tears (1902) and The Idol (1902). The Maitland’s was performed in 1933 while Sweet Aloes (1934) ran for 476 performances.

Both Gerald Du Maurier and his daughter Daphne du Maurier are closely associated with the theatre. He wrote The Dancers (1923) starring Tallulah Bankhead. Daphne followed in her father’s footsteps with The Years Between (1945).

The Boy Friend (1954) by Sandy Wilson ran for 2,078 performances. Joan Littlewood’s ground-breaking Theatre Workshop played at the Wyndham’s featuring, among other productions, Shelagh Delaney’s A Taste of Honey (1954) to critical acclaim.

Another successful transfer to the theatre was Alan Bennett's National Theatre smash hit The History Boys in 2006.

The Wyndham’s closed temporarily for final refurbishment before reopening in September 2008. Kenneth Branagh starred in Michael Grandage's production of Chekhov's Ivanov; a new adaptation by Tom Stoppard.
