Prince Edward Theatre London

History of the Prince Edward Theatre

The Prince Edward was built during a time of intense theatrical venue activity with the Cambridge, the Whitehall, the Phoenix and the re-built Adelphi all opening their doors in the same year, 1930. Built on the site of a major drapers shop called the Emporium, the Prince Edward was designed by Edward Stone and constructed by builders Griggs and Sons.

The theatre underwent several transformations and was renamed The Radio Theatre, the London Casino, the Queensbury All Services Club and the Casino Cinema.

The venue eventually returned to its first title, the Prince Edward in 1978 when it also housed a new Andrew Lloyd Webber musical called Evita. The musical was to prove a phenomenal success and ran for a total of eight years.

Landmark productions also include Chess (1986), Mamma Mia (1999), Mary Poppins (2008) and Broadway smash hit musical Jersey Boys (2008).
