SAVOY THEATRE

Address: Savoy Ct, Strand, London WC2H 7JH

Savoy Theatre London

The Savoy Theatre opened in 1881 after theatrical impresario Richard D’Oyly Carte commissioned the development to host the original comic operas of Gilbert and Sullivan. The Grade II-listed building was designed by C.J. Phipps and was an architectural breakthrough in its use of lighting.

The Savoy was the first building in the world to be lit entirely by electricity, after Sir Joseph Swan supplied 1,200 incandescent lamps which were powered by a 120-horsepower generator. Carte explained that electric lighting was brought in because the enjoyment of theatrical performances were being spoilt by “foul air” and heat from gas-burners.

The building was renovated in 1929 and rebuilt in 1993 after a fire which means it is one of the best preserved Art Deco style theatres in the West End.
