History of the Shaftesbury Theatre
On the 26th December 1911 the Shaftesbury Theatre opened in the West End originally under the name of the New Princes Theatre with a production of The Three Musketeers.
Since then, the theatre has undergone two name changes; in 1914 it became the Princes Theatre and later in 1963 it was renamed the Shaftesbury Theatre. They also recently announced they will be changing their name to the Judi Dench Theatre.
The stage phenomenon Hair played here for just shy of two thousand performances, but this legendary run was cut short when part of the ceiling fell down in 1973 forcing closure. The future looked decidedly grim for the theatre but after a sustained campaign the theatre was awarded Grade II listed status in 1974.
Currently, the theatre is undergoing renovations meaning only two levels of the theatre are in operation
