The Woman in Black is one of the longest running productions currently in the West End. This spine-tingling horror has been the subject of several films over time, but the longevity of this West End run shows the endearingly popularity of stage adaptations. It was created by Stephen Mallatratt from the book of the same name by Susan Hill.

The story revolves around Arthur Kipps, a young solicitor charged with overseeing the last will and testament of Alice Drablow, the sole occupant and recently deceased inhabitant of Eel Marsh House. What he finds is a terrifying tale of intrigue and despair that will haunt him for the rest of his life. Slowly, inexorably, the tale unfolds of a mysterious Woman in Black.

History of the Fortune Theatre

The Fortune Theatre was designed by architect Ernest Schaufelberg and constructed in 1924 for impresario Lawrence Cowen. It was built on the site of an actor's haunt, a public house called the Albion Tavern.

The theatre was the first theatrical venue in the West End to be built after the First World War and constructed using new concrete forming techniques. This intimate venue is somewhat dwarfed by the much larger Theatre Royal Drury Lane just across the street.

The first production featured at the Fortune Theatre was The Sinners, written by Lawrence Cowen. In the Second World War the theatre was home to ENSA (the Entertainments National Service Association).

The Woman in Black has been running at the theatre since 1989; an amazing achievement on the West End.
