Cambridge Theatre London
Compared to many of the aged institutions surrounding it The Cambridge Theatre is a relative baby in the West End theatre world. When the theatre opened in 1930 it included beautiful interior design by architects Wimperis, Simpson & Guthrie, which has been carefully restored more recently.
The first productions to grace the Cambridge Theatre stage was André Charlot's Masquerade in 1930. Deborah Kerr made her stage debut at the Cambridge alongside Edith Evans in Heartbreak House in 1942, while Audrey Hepburn also trod the boards as part of the cast of Sauce Piquant in 1950.
For a short while the theatre became a cinema in 1967, before reopening to welcome Ian Mckellen in Hamlet in 1971. Dudley Moore and The John Curry Theatre of Skating at the Cambridge Theatre smashed box office records in 1976.
The controversial Jerry Springer The Opera by comedian Stewart Lee and Richard Thomas ran at the Cambridge Theatre from 2003. Matilda the Musical opened in 2011 and is still running in 2015.
